alderaan isn't just a star wars reference: it's an asterism!

"Alderaan is an unused name for the two pairs of stars α and β Canis Minoris (Procyon and Gomeisa) and α and β Geminorum (Castor and Pollux). The name was taken from Arabic al-dhirā`ain الذراعين (= "the two forearms" or "the two front paws" or "the two cubit measuring rods"). The term originally referred to the "measuring rods" meaning, but an astronomer whose native language was not Arabic supposed that it meant "two forepaws" literally and invented an enlarged rampant Lion asterism centered on Leo and stretching over a quarter of the sky."

thanks, wikipedia! i can totally see how this asterism was created: the heads of gemini and the stars of canis minor form a significant section of the winter hexagon.

back from tucson with a bad cold. i had a pretty good time at the wedding, but i was very glad to be back in portland, land of coffee people milkshakes & church signs like this:

incidentally, this is the church parking lot we taught carl to drive in. also, it's a site for one of the weekly farmer's markets.

having complained about torchwood, i actually have a movie to recommend: "the lives of others." the acting & story are superb. i love its layering and how the characters chose different levels of secrecy & self-editing. like amelie, the writer/director quite obviously loved what he was doing. based on his interviews, sven & i call him the "german joss whedon." :)

neil's right: The People in Torchwood Season One Are All Too Stupid To Live . we're only on the sixth episode but so far i am incredibly unimpressed with the amount of standing around that goes on when people should be running or shooting or dodging. torchwood sucked all the charm out of jack's character, and i cannot tell you how much i hate owen's character. i don't think they make a scale that measures that intense level of white-hot fury.

sven & i were walking home under the clear blue sky of an early spring afternoon. we passed a guy walking on the other side of the street.

"hey, bitch!" he yelled.

i whipped around in horror to see him on his cell phone. he finished the rest of his sentence: "pick up. i know you're there." when he noticed sven & i had turned around to look at him, he smiled and waved us off: "oh, no! i wasn't talking about you!"

strangely, that didn't make me feel much better.
