holy cripes! well, i got sendmail to send me several messages locally and at csusm (it's also generating a bazillion messages a second in the mail.log file from delayed system reports it's so happy to finally be sending somewhere other than /dev/null). and better yet, yes, it does work with the standard php mail function! yay! *dances*

the best instructions i found were on a page called "Receiving Daily System Reports in MacOS X," though i found i kept having to add "sudo" to many of the commands and replace
m4 ../m4/cf.m4 osx.mc > /tmp/sendmail.cf
with
gm4 ../m4/cf.m4 osx.mc > /tmp/sendmail.cf

plus, i'll be using pine to access local mail instead of setting up an imap server. or i could learn how to use *gasp* mail!

[#] [0]
i'm not having any luck figuring the minimum i need to do to enable sendmail to work w/ php in os x. i only care about sending, not receiving. i've seen a couple of articles which mention this weird incompatibility, but they don't have any "and this is what i did to make it work" solutions. :(

well, that was traumatic. i called the vet and they said to bring amelia in immediately and though they were very busy and closed at 1 and took their last patient at 12:30, if i could get in before they closed they'd be sure to see her.

that meant i had to get dressed, nuke a beef tamale, grab a stool sample (lots of that laying about), put her collar on, and stuff her into the cat carrier. after much complaining in the car (fortunately, just down the street!), she quieted down in the waiting room.

the staff kept calling her "amelia bedelia" and asked if i had kids. filling out the paperwork, i realized how little i know about her. the only other person in the waiting room tells me about one of her cats cat whose leg was amputated because of a giant tumour on its shoulder. "do you watch animal planet?" she asked, and seems disappointed i don't get that channel.

then whitey the dog ran out of exam room 1 and i expected there to be much hissing and growling from amelia, but not one peep! not even an uncomfortable shifting in the carrier. but all the cat smells made him click his teeth together oddly and repeatedly.

the quiet didn't continue when she was in the exam room, however. after all that struggle to get her in the cat carrier before we left, she deeply resented being taken out to be weighed (12.3 lbs!) and voluntarily wiggled her way back in after the assistant left. while we were waiting for the actual vet, i took tess out and played music for her while i was writing. i figured it would seem more like home if i did: me clicking away while music played in the background. though she was glaring, she seemed quiet enough.

so i was entirely unprepared for the hysterics when the vet came in. i don't know if she's had previous experience with vets, but yikes! she wouldn't let us take her out of the carrier, and the vet even had big leather gloves on. there was hissing, growling, shrieking, batting, squirming, flailing, biting. eventually the vet just had to let her be. she said the stool sample came back negative for parasites, so based on what i had told her and the fact that amelia was so "feisty and energetic," she was going to guess it was colitis and gave me a prescription for flagyl.

and then i came home and cleaned. everything. i've just now finished. amelia, who has been mostly hiding in the bathroom and under the bed since we got back, is finally back out lounging in the living room. i have to go to trader joe's to get cat food.

the trip was pleasant enough. as predicted, i drove, i ate, i drove back. i figure it was good practice for the xmas trip, though it was only 7 hours one way instead of 24. getting out of san diego was actually the most painful part by far: 2 hours, inching along! once i got out to the desert, i was fine. amazingly enough, it rained most of the way back (lightning!). trixie got strangely low gas mileage most of the trip, which i find particularly odd because i remember getting good gas mileage the last time i drove to phoenix. i'm attributing it to the wind.

this trip was brought to you by the following soundtrack: rob mead, ed: love will come around; annie lennox: diva; kmfdm: naive; matt gitchell's college band, "birthday suit;" talking heads: little creatures; violent femmes: blister in the sun; steven covey: tapes 1-3 of the 7 habits of highly effective people; kevin trudeau: tapes 1-4 of mega memory.

wow! i just got a big box from michael's dad: it was another "manu forti" glass like the one he made for my dad! what a wonderful surprise! i'll bring it to my grandmother's so she can see what i got for him. *sniffles*

[#] [0]
have a happy thanksgiving, all! i'm on my way to grandmother's house (in the odd california rain, yes, rain!). my todo list for the next three days would read: drive to phoenix; eat turkey; drive home. though in the back of my head i'm thinking, -and figure out sendmail on nefarious.-

much badness and weirdness on nefarious (figures, just as i was resolved to get php & mysql working). recent calamaties include, but are not limited to:
* weird ie default font
* copy/paste not working
* stickies changes not "sticking"
* custom icons not enabled or not sticking
* things have been "unexpectedly quit"ing all over the place. i noticed this with audion several days ago, but now a lot of applications are doing it (stickies, help viewer, dreamweaver(?) etc.) one app unexpectedly quit so suddenly and thoroughly that it threw me out of aqua all together and made me log back in.
* netinfo manager doesn't work: it repeats this message 4 times: "Domain (null) has no root account. You must log in on the computer named (null) (where the master is located) to make changes." when i launch it, my console log fills with "ATSServer got a fatal exception!! Please check /var/tmp/ATSServer_168."
* process manager won't -do- anything when loaded
what's going on? i've rebooted & run disk utility several times. i tried to use norton utilities but i couldn't get it to even see nefarious while i was in 10.2 and when the cd booted into 9.2, i got a message about fixing a major error in the b-tree catalog and then, "norton disk doctor has come across an unexpected problem and is unable to continue scanning the disk. error found: 23019. please try scanning the disk again." i've never seen that before! >:(

i so don't want to do this right now. i so don't want to spend all this energy troubleshooting.

from jay, about the online courses database:
I don't think we will have time to do these now. When I spoke to you before it was an offer for quick tasks that could be done in a pocket of time we had in November, when we were between projects. December is already committed to other projects. We will try to pick these up as soon as possible -- probably start in January.
though, of course, january is during the heaviest development period and i won't be able to breathe, much less think about something like this. too bad he didn't actually tell me the time frame when he talked to me the first time.

i have have to figure out how to do databases. have to. or this. will. never. happen. :(

guh. i never thought i'd be in another job where my goal was to get to friday. but here i am! actually, today my goal is to get to 5 p.m. i have what i think will be a fairly painless meeting w/ an instructor and then some more time to kill before i go to the artist's way. but i might go early and then just read in the car or catch up on email.

do i know online courses or what? this whole "division of labour" thing w/ garrett has been eating at me. if we had to do it, i knew i wanted the communications department, sociology, and college of ed. what i didn't know was how much more i would have to also take on and possibly fight over. but i figured those chunks would take up a significant amount of "my half" and i'd worry about the rest when i ran the numbers.

which i did last night (or very early this morning, depending on how you look at it). and it turns out those three departments take up exactly half of the workload when figured by "hours worked," which is how i wanted to divide them. *dances* and i knew it! i could feel it! i just can't believe i could confirm it.

grrr.... weirdness w/ blogger again. *sighs* and at home i've been noticing that the airport will occasionally drop its connection to the computer momentarily. this isn't a big deal for most things, because most internet stuff doesn't need a constant connection, but apparently remote desktop connection does. it drops me every time.

so i totally missed the leonids last night, and it wasn't through lack of trying. first my artist's way group laid outside around 8:30 p.m. near the large tree swaying in the shadows, but because of the otherwise glorious moon, i didn't see one freaking shooting star! then i drove around the back roads in poway and ramona. while doing so, one of my poor prius' front tires got caught in a wash and it took me 20 minutes to get out (that's the closest i've ever been to getting stuck somewhere. i was starting to get worried). still no freaking shooting stars. so i called dan, who had expressed interest in seeing them and asked him if he had a secret weapon ('cause if anyone did, it would be him). but, no, he didn't. so i drove home and didn't see any freaking shooting stars.

then, this morning, jennifer says, "hey, did you see the meteor shower last night? we went to palomar & it was great!"

grrrrrr.......... *must.... control.... fist of ..... death!*

well, i'll be damned. that wasn't nearly as painful as i thought. *pauses* teresa agreed we could move toward the shifting of my responsibilities to "outreach, research & support" if the team could agree on a timeline. i'd be suprised if we could get everyone agree to spring, but maybe we agree on the 50/50 split in spring, then 60/40 in summer, 70/30 in fall, and 80/20 in spring04. and that at point, i should be able to assume the "outreach, research and support" title in full *knocks wood* so a year, if i'm lucky. teresa worries that there might be resentment about me doing the "easy" work, but i just think we pick the path that works for each of us -- even teresa admits i do better in long-range planning and garrett does better w/ short-term projects.

chuck thinks even the 50/50 split should be enough to allow me to start working on the bits of research & support and other things i like. i just think the 50/50 split will let me spend twice as long on each course. :) by the time we get to the 80/20 or even 90/10, i'll have to spend time on the other parts of my job or i'll be bored!

did this page load slowly? i'm experimenting w/ running cgicomments on nefarious, but because it opens a seperate cgi connection to run the counts on every entry (that's up to 30 per page in the archives!), the page has to wait until all counts are finished before it displays.

two options: 1) find another commenting program or 2) live without the counts. what do you think? *gasp* you could use the commenting feature to tell me!

okay, this is driving me crazy. the darwin/mac os x distribution of apache places the supporting files all over the place, and the man pages haven't changed to reflect that. i had already found the logs & configuration files and placed symbolic links to them from /Library/WebServer so all my apache stuff would be in the same place. today i was trying to find the httpd.pid file so i could kill the process remotely and had a bugger of a time finding it. so for the record, here are the man page paths and the -actual- paths for these files:

(referenced in httpd man) > (actual darwin path)
/usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf > /private/etc/httpd/httpd.conf
/usr/local/apache/conf/srm.conf > n/a (all bundled into httpd.conf)
/usr/local/apache/conf/access.conf > n/a (ditto)
/usr/local/apache/conf/mime.types > /private/etc/httpd/mime.types
/usr/local/apache/conf/magic > /private/etc/httpd/magic
/usr/local/apache/logs/error_log > /private/var/log/httpd/error_log
/usr/local/apache/logs/access_log > /private/var/log/httpd/access_log
/usr/local/apache/logs/httpd.pid > /private/var/run/httpd.pid

[#] [0]

[#] [0]
okay, now i'm going home.

[#] [0]
you didn't think i was serious, did you? :)

i decided i had had enough with the 27,000 hits a day to nefarious.web trolling for mp3s. (and for once, i'm not exaggerating: the count, thanks to the power of grep, cat -n, tail -1 and cut -f 1, was 26,970 hits today as of this posting.) traffic like that does not keep me below the radar, which is where i want to stay for the moment.

so everybody wave "bye-bye" to the old mp3 directory. i hope to watch the 404 errors roll by in the access_log and eventually dwindle away. for those of you i know and love, fear not: all that is gone is not lost. things are not what they seem. i love apache. :)

i am a sneaky villian; a regular, average, good times punk kid; i am avoidant; the cookie monster; i turned out to be ford prefect in the "which hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy character are you?" quiz; if i was a monty python sketch i would be the nudge, nudge, wink, wink sketch (for the life of me, i can't figure out why); while according to the "which tragic shakespearean heroine are you?" quiz, i would be desdemona.

oh, look! chuck has this team-lead thing down! after accepting the meeting (which will happen right after the tech fair, which could be good or bad), i asked, "though i'm a little nervous about the format: why just me, you & teresa? what about the rest of our team?" and he wrote:
Good question. Because you are the one with misgivings and alternative suggestions. It is not meant to be punitive. If you're going to express strongly held opinions then it is only fair that we listen to them and you exaplin them. I want to make sure that Teresa, and I for that matter, understands where you're coming from. It is a sign of respect. If I did not value your point of view I wouldn't bother.

I suspect it will better to do this first so that we understand our organizational parameters, then when we meet as a group to finalize our plans we will know what our constraints are. It is good to dream, but it is also good to view your goals thru a filter of what is possible.

You really shouldn't be nervous. You have opinions and you want folks to address them. We want to listen. It's meant to be communication, not confrontation.
i almost went right upstairs and thanked him. i'm not sure it makes me any less nervous because the sincerity is hard to gauge, but it's a chance. another chance to rescue myself from another year and a half of pain. my last chance. and i have to take it.

desperate to make my blogging experience a little less error-prone, and hampered by my desire to host off-site and burdell's attempts to make his box a little more secure by denying ftpd, i turned to microblogger, a blogging tool wrapped into a bash script. but i must be missing something. i think i've configured apache to parse server-side includes, but still.... nothing....

[update 11.15: while i like the idea, i don't think the format will work for me, anyway. there's no way to reference a particular post in the archives.]

i learned about two potentially nifty mac os x tools today: pbcopy & pbpaste. these allow you to copy & paste between the command line and the gui. *waits for gasps of amazement* so what, you ask?

ls -1 | pbcopy
or maybe
cat ~/Documents/test/* | pbcopy
or maybe
pbpaste >> testtext
or
pbpaste | wc
or even
cal | pbcopy

and i'm not even a programmer! i'll bet there's all sorts of cool stuff you could do if you were! of course, you can also copy/paste between prompts this way, too.

i also found my reeses peanut butter cup of websites: the google blog!

i pitched chuck a hopeful, fascinating & spontaneous proposal this afternoon, launched entirely by accident when jennifer said, "well, why don't you just give all of it to garrett, then?" i became very zen: desire is the root of all evil, right? you must give to gain. the brilliant part of the plan is leveraging something that's currently underutilized but that i know chuck has big plans for when we hit the new library: the trc! and if it doesn't work out, well, we've always got plan b to fall back on. wish me luck!

oh, and i've been checking on prices to colorado for xmas. i did find two $336 fares at odd hours, though i was hoping for something under $300. driving takes another two days at least, but it's half that $$.

so yesterday was interesting! i met w/ kathy brown to talk about her tulip research. kathy's the person who cares about adult education and technology training (and the person i hope will help me get into ucsd's cognitive science grad program). anyway, she says i got about a semester and a half's worth of discussion about activity systems. we also talked about the differences between coordination, cooperation & collaboration, which have a lot of meaning for me because of the garrett situation and the generate project.

later that day i teamed up with some calligraphers to crawl down to chula vista to attend a medieval art lecture by mark van stone, where i sketched a few interesting pieces. i left work at 3:30 p.m. and we were still late for the 6:30 p.m. lecture! this is one of the reasons i come into work late and leave late, so i can ignore the traffic. does anyone know why clovis became christian?

today is chock full of meetings. tedious, useless meetings, at that, except for the emotionally volatile one w/ the instructional development team later this afternoon. i've been trying to get the blogger archives working w/o success. jennifer has just twisted my hair into little swiss-miss buns on either side of my head. we'll see how long they last.

and winner of the "person from furthest away who found my blog while searching for prebinding" award: shay telfer from perth, australia! *wild applause* shay also placed second place in the "anyone who's ever found my blog while searching for prebinding" award. which sucks, because i have nothing useful to offer. after i figured out it didn't really mean anything terrible was happening, i finally just learned to live with the error messages in my console.

and this is why teresa drives me crazy:
Does your phone have a light that blinks when you have voicemail?
which is her way of asking why i haven't responded to that message. but god forbid anyone ask anyone else a direct question around here.

my first performance in 4 years went smashingly well. *sighs happily*

i'm sleepy today. i have to pick up a money order and return it to my apartment complex so they'll let me stay here another month. then i go in to work and leave early to set up for the generate project. i'm telling you: give me a script and give me a stage and i'm ridiculously happy.

go vote!

*yawns* i should never go first. bill recorded us telling an "intergenerational" story and mine sucked. the run-through went really well tonight, i thought, considering how un-ready we were the last time we met and the fact that jennifer wasn't there. (nobody knows where she is. i haven't heard from her since thursday, and even then only briefly. she's not answering any of her phones.) karen was a little trippy w/ me: "are you working on your lines? because this is our worktime and you should be working on your lines." "are you writing this down? because you should be writing this down." "you'll need to project, okay?" and i'm thinking, hello! i'm not an idiot! i even have a theatre degree! but other than that, it looks like it'll come together just fine.
